It' not officially 2009 here yet. It's only 9:18 as I write this. We haven't been able to stay up late since we arrived here in beautiful Hawaii but I think tonight will be different. Apparently the Hawaiians have a unique custom of shooting off personal fireworks all night, even before it gets dark, until well after midnight. Our "neighbor" right across the street has warned us that it will be wild and loud for hours on end. We've also been told it's "legal" to shoot off fireworks from 9:00 until 1:00. So, it doesn't look like any of us will be getting any sleep any time soon!
We are winding down our vacation and really only have tomorrow to do any last minute activities we haven't been able to do. Today we made a return trip to the North Shore. We went there last Sunday to visit the famous Waimea Bay where the big waves come on shore all winter but it was flat as a lake. We heard today would be better so we headed back over and weren't disappointed. We stayed for several hours watching surfers at the Banzai Pipeline. I'm not sure what we are going to do tomorrow. The weather hasn't always cooperated and it's been rainy or cloudy much of the time. We will have to see where the sun comes out tomorrow.
We have had a wonderful time. I've taken almost 1,000 pictures, so far and a few videos too. We've visited all over the island and seen all the popular sights and some not so well known. Tyler has been a great tour guide and between him and Amber and Anaki's (Andy's Hawaiian name) Garmin and Howard's innate sense of direction, we haven't gotten lost once. So that's it for 2008. Another year begins tomorrow and I can't wait to see what it will bring for The Mitchell's in Michigan (and a few other places). I wish everyone a happy, healthy 2009.
